Dragonfire is one of
Imagic's most popular game titles, so it's little wonder that the game
saw a release on eight different video game and home computer
platforms. But even as good as some of these releases are, it's the
Mattel Intellivision version that many gamers still consider the
overall best version of this game. Imagic developed and released both
the Intellivision and Atari 2600 Dragonfire titles together, and while
both versions are very solid titles, the Intellivision version features
more detailed visuals and added variety in its play control with the
addition of the archer shooting arrows down at you from the tower
during your mad dash across the castle drawbridge. In Dragonfire, you take on the role of the king's servant and you're given the task of infiltrating the castle, that's been overrun by dragons, and taking back the king's treasures. You'll have to make your way across the castle's drawbridge while dodging the many fireballs tossed your way by the dragons. You'll then have to quickly gather up all of the treasures lying around the castle's storage room before the dragon burns you with a fireball. Dragonfire for the Intellivision actually started out as a joke. Programmer Alan Smith, then an intern at Imagic, was wrapping up development of his first Intellivision title Dracula when he saw that the Atari group was developing a new game for the Atari 2600 called Dragonfire. That night he quickly worked up a version of the game on the Intellivision system and showed it off to the Atari group the next day as a joke. Of course the next day the joke backfired when someone from marketing came down to ask Alan when he would have his Intellivision Dragonfire game finished up. As it turns out, the Atari 2600 and Intellivision Dragonfire games both shipped together. |
