The beautiful city of
Atlantis lies deep under the surface of the sea.
One day, an evil fleet of Gorgon vessels appear overhead and begin
relentlessly bombarding the city with their deathrays. You take control
of the Acropolis Command Post, along with the two sentry posts, and you
must fire their cannons at the flying Gorgon vessels in the sky above
you before they can get close enough to fire their Deathrays and
destroy the city of Atlantis. The play control in the Intellivision version of Atlantis got a complete overhaul and places much more play control in the player's hands. Instead of just firing from the Sentry Posts as you do in other version of Atlantis, you have to target the Gorgon Vessels using a cross-hair sight that you move around using the Intellivision control disc. The top fire button shoots the anti-aircraft cannon at the left Sentry Post and the bottom fire button shoots the cannon at the right Sentry post. You can also press the "Saucer" button on the keypad to launch the Sentinel Saucer. You can then fly around the screen shooting both left and right to take down Gorgon Vessels from the sky. You only have a limited amount of fuel in the Saucer so you must return it to the Sentinel Pad before your fuel runs out or you'll crash. You must take down wave after wave of Gorgon Vessels throughout the day and night. The night scene in Atlantis actually came during a late night of programming when the team decided to blow off some steam. They began tossing a frisbee around while someone tried to shoot it down with a dart gun. When the power went out, someone brought out a powerful flashlight and began using it to spotlight the frisbee for the shooter. Pat Ransil took this idea and applied it to his Intellivision Atlantis game and thus the night scene was born. |
