Demon Attack went on to
become a huge hit for Imagic on the Atari 2600 VCS system. Designer Rob
Fulop took a very simple space shoot 'em up theme and turned it into
gold for Imagic. With the popularity of the game on the 2600 system,
Demon Attack ended up being ported to many of the popular game systems
and home computers of the time period. Many of these ports added
impressive visuals and sound effects, but some also lost the overall
feel of the classic Demon Attack game. The IBM PC Jr. version of Demon
Attack is widely regarded as the best version of Demon Attack ever
made, but it gets a serious run for its money by this Commodore 64
version. In Demon Attack, you take control of your space cannon and your task is to take out wave after wave of enemy demons that swoop down towards the planet's surface. What makes the game so much fun to play is the erratic flight patterns of the demons, not to mention the fact that they'll fire lasers down at you and even split in two when hit by your laser cannon making them twice as dangerous and even more difficult to destroy while in flight. You'll soon get to take on the demon mothership, where you'll have to penetrate the ship's shields and place a well-timed laser blast right between the demon's eye. The visuals in the Commodore 64 version are almost as good as those found in the visually impressive PC Jr. version, but this version does manage to clearly outperform the PC Jr. version when it comes to play control. This game controls like a dream and the game play is classic Demon Attack at its best. The IBM PC Jr. version of Demon Attack is quite impressive, but pound for pound it would be hard to beat this outstanding Commodore 64 version. |
