BOB SMITH
Game Designer/Programmer

Blue Dragon

Bob Smith is one of the original members of Imagic, and also one of the most respected video game programmers from the time period. Bob has been everything from a Sailboat builder to a video game programmer over the years, but is probably best remembered for his Dragonfire game for the Atari 2600 VCS system.

Before joining Imagic, Bob was working at a lumber yard where he was able to somehow convince the owner to purchase a personal computer. Bob programmed software for the computer that was used to keep inventory, but eventually decided to put his programming talents to better use by creating video games. Bob wrote a computer  game and sold it to Creative Computing in 1979. Not long after that, he caught the eye of Atari and was then hired on by the company one year later. While at Atari, Bob created  such Atari 2600 VCS  titles as Video Pinball and Arcade Pinball before deciding to set his sights a little higher. In 1981, Bob joined a few of his  fellow Atari employees who left the company to form Imagic.

Bob ended up designing and programming several Atari 2600 VCS titles while at Imagic, but his hit Atari 2600 game Dragonfire still stands as his most popular game release. In fact, Dragonfire was such a big seller for Imagic that it ended up being ported to just about every one of the various  game consoles and personal computers of the time period. Bob went on to work for several game developers over the next two decades, but is now retired and living the good life in Oregon. He does continue to make appearances at various classic gaming trade shows and expos.
