Shootin' Gallery is one
of the more rare Atari 2600 titles, and while the game was originally
designed with very young children in mind, its addictive qualities and
solid game play make this a game that people of all ages can enjoy.
Shootin' Gallery obviously shares more than a few similarities with the
arcade hit Carnival, but at its core, Shootin' Gallery is actually a
much more rewarding gaming experience and features more of a sense of
urgency than Carnival does. It's this added sense of urgency that
injects a whole new element of strategy to the game play mix and
ultimately makes for a more well-rounded and entertaining playing
experience. In Shootin' Gallery you take control of a target pistol and your goal is to take out as many of the moving targets as you can before your time runs out and the cuckoo eats up all of your ammunition. You have to shoot kangaroos, toy trains, monkeys, and bunny rabbits that move back and forth across the screen. There is one catch. The cuckoo clock is constantly counting down, and the only way to reset it is to shoot it. While you can go after the other targets, you'll still have to remember to shoot the clock every few seconds, because if you don't, the cuckoo will pop out and feast on some of your ammunition. When you run out of ammunition, your game is over. The visuals in Shootin' Gallery are quite a bit better than those found in Carnival and the sound effects are much better as well. The catchy circus theme that plays throughout the game sets the perfect atmosphere for the action taking place. The game's sound effects are extremely realistic as well. You'll really feel like your at an old-fashioned carvival shooting gallery. The game is easy enough for people of any ages to enjoy, but don't let that fool you. This game has plenty of challenge and is one of those games that once you start playing it, it's nearly impossible to put down. |
