ATARI 2600 ODYSSEY 2 INTELLIVISION COLECOVISION COMPUTERS |
PUBLISHER: Imagic RELEASED: 1982 PROGRAM: Rob Fulop FORMAT: Cartridge |
Demon Attack was one of
Imagic's first game releases and
also one of their most successful. It also won Imagic a nice little
lawsuit from Atari due to the game's uncanny resemblances to the Atari
2600 port of the hit arcade game Phoenix. The lawsuit was settled out
of court and Demon Attack went on to become a huge hit for Imagic. It's
probably the most memorable Imagic release and the one that put Rob
Fulop's name on the list of the most talented game designers of this
time period. In Demon Attack, you're marooned on the Ice Planet of Krybor and you must fight off wave after wave of attacking demons. Each new wave of demons become increasingly more powerful as does their barrage of firepower. Using your laser cannon, you must take down these demons before they can reach the planet below. The game play in Demon Attack is about as simple as you can get. You take control of a powerful laser cannon and with it you must shoot down each wave of demons as they swoop down towards the planet's surface. You basically move left and right using the joystick controller, and you fire your laser cannon by pressing the fire button. You must also avoid the demon's own laser fire, as the demon closest to you can fire their lasers down at you. It doesn't help that these demons have a very erratic pattern of movement, which can make it very difficult to hit them with your laser. The Atari 2600 version isn't quite as flashy visually as some of the other console releases of Demon Attack, and it's also minus the really cool demon mothership level. The sound effects are fairly impressive, given the 2600's hardware limitations, but other console versions are even better. Having said all that, this is still the original version of the game and one of the best Atari 2600 VCS Imagic releases. |
