The beautiful city of Atlantis lies deep under the surface of the sea. One day, an evil fleet of Gorgon vessels appear overhead and begin relentlessly bombarding the city with their deathrays. You take control of the Acropolis Command Post, along with the two sentry posts, and you must fire their cannons at the flying Gorgon vessels in the sky above you before they can get close enough to fire their Deathrays.

The game play in Atlantis is fairly straightforward. To fire from the Acropolis Command Post in the middle of the screen, you simply press the fire button. If you want to fire from the left or right sentry posts, you simply hold the joystick in the direction of the sentry and then press the fire button. The Gorgon vessels fly across the screen and drop down one level with each pass. If you allow them to reach the surface of the sea, they can then fire their Deathrays and destroy one of the seven districts of Atlantis. If you lose all seven districts, the game is then over.

The Atari 2600 version of Atlantis is actually one of the best of the Atari VCS Imagic releases. It contains vibrant and detailed visuals with very little flicker. The sound effects are equally impressive, and a testament to how much power the Imagic designers were able to syphon out of the Atari 2600 system's limited hardware.

Imagic sent out a special version of the game called Atlantis II to gamers who got the highest scores in the "Defend Atlantis" game contest they held. The game was basically the same as the regular version of Atlantis, but it featured faster game play and awarded less point values. The four gamers who got the highest scores on this game were then sent to Bermuda where they took part in the finals of the contest. The winner of the contest took home a whopping $10,000 in prize money.
